AGSI Welcomes New Minister for Justice and Highlights Key Priorities
The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI) warmly welcomes the appointment of Deputy Jim O’Callaghan as the new Minister for Justice.
Representing 2,500 Garda Sergeants and Inspectors AGSI say it looks forward to engaging with the Minister to address critical issues facing policing in Ireland today.
General Secretary Ronan Clogher emphasised the importance of meeting with AGSI ‘sooner rather than later’.
“We invite the Minister to meet with us at the earliest opportunity to hear directly from those working on the frontline. Understanding the views and challenges of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors is essential to shaping effective policing policies.”
The AGSI has called for immediate action to address the depletion of Garda numbers amidst a growing population, highlighting the urgent need to build capacity in the force to meet increasing demands.
“Ireland’s population continues to grow, yet Garda numbers are declining. This creates significant challenges for public safety. We need a clear and urgent plan to recruit and retain members to build capacity in the service,” Mr. Clogher stated.
The AGSI also stressed the importance of increased investment in community policing, advocating for a more visible Garda presence to enhance public trust and safety.
“Policing must be rooted in communities, with a focus on visibility and engagement. Investment in this approach is critical to ensuring safe and thriving communities across Ireland.
“We look forward to working constructively with Minister O’Callaghan to ensure the needs of Garda members and the communities they serve are prioritised,” Mr. Clogher concluded.
