GSOC Chairman Resignation – Minister for Justice Statement

The Minister has been informed by Simon O’Brien, Chairman of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC), of his intention to resign his position with effect from 30th January 2015.

Simon O’Brien was appointed Chairman of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission on 12th December, 2011, a role to which he brought a wealth of knowledge and experience. Immediately prior to his appointment to GSOC he served as a Deputy to the Chief Inspector of the Garda Síochána. Inspectorate (GSI) from March 2010. Prior to that he worked with London’s Metropolitan Police Service from 1978. Mr O’Brien is returning to the UK where he will shortly take up a role as the Chief Executive of the Pensions Ombudsman Service for the UK. The Minister thanks Mr O’Brien for the important contribution he made in his role as Chairperson of GSOC as well as the valuable contribution to his previous role in the Garda Inspectorate, and wishes him all the best in his endeavours in his new career.
