To the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI),
As 2016 draws to a close I want to express my gratitude to you all for your commitment and dedication to An Garda Síochána throughout the past twelve months. Your dedication to duty and hard work are very much appreciated.
2016 was a seminal year for the State as we marked the centenary of the events of 1916. This year was also a seminal year for An Garda Síochána.
Firstly, An Garda Síochána held a pivotal role in ensuring public safety at commemorative events throughout the country. As we participated in these events, I was incredibly proud of the way in which the members of An Garda Síochána exemplified professionalism and courtesy through their engagement with the public. A simple hand shake; a kind word of thanks; or a child standing for a photograph with a Garda at one of the many commemorative events – these actions demonstrated the close ties that we continue to have with the communities in which we police. These ties are something that we should all take pride in and strive to maintain.
Secondly, this year witnessed the launch of our five year Modernisation and Renewal Programme (MRP). I acknowledge that the past number of years have been difficult for you all, both personally and professionally. However, I am committed to ensuring that changes continue to be made within An Garda Síochána for the better. The MRP will enable An Garda Síochána to make improvements across a wide number of areas. However, it will focus on providing supports for our people; our processes; out technology; and our structures to make An Garda Síochána a beacon of 21st century policing. Numerous initiatives under the MRP are already underway and others will continue to be implemented as we enter 2017. I remain committed to keeping you all informed and apprised of the developments.
I know that Christmas can be a difficult period for many, especially for those who are unwell or those who have lost a loved one. For those of you suffering from ill health, on behalf of the entire Garda community I extend to you our heartfelt thoughts and good wishes for a speedy recovery. I would also like to take a moment to remember former Garda members who are sadly no longer with us.
I wish the members of AGSI, your families and loved ones a safe and happy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year for 2017.
Guím Nollaig shíochánta agus Athbhliain shona daoibh go léir
