This week the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors had the first opportunity to sit down with the recently appointed Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan. As a representative organisation of 2,500 Sergeants and Inspectors, much of our work involves advocacy, engagement, and providing insight to decision-makers from the policing frontline. Members of the National Executive and Secretariat met the Minister and Department of Justice officials to brief them on the main issues affecting members and how we can work in collaboration to address them. Speaking following the meeting AGSI President, Declan Higgins said:
We had a positive meeting with Minister O’Callaghan, our first since his appointment. We had an open discussion around the many challenges currently facing An Garda Siochana. We look forward to a proactive and constructive working relationship.
In attendance were President Declan Higgins, General Secretary Ronan Clogher, Vice President Nick Tarrant, and National Executive member Brian Downey.
