Darragh Mc Donald, 18 yrs, who took Gold in the Paralympic 400mtrs Mens Freestyle Swimming on September 1st is none other than a nephew of the AGSI Deputy General Secretary John Redmond.

John was at the event with his two sons and other family members to witness the win. He said ‘ the atmosphere was electric and the tension was high. Darragh had been beaten to a Silver in China in 2008 and said then that he’d be back for the Gold. He won his heat by almost 30 seconds early on Saturday. By 5.45pm on Saturday evening the nerves were raw’

Darragh didn’t disappoint and stormed home to stand proudly in the winner’s spot to accept his medal. John said ‘ to see the Tricolour and sing the National Anthem while watching such a fine young man wearing a Paralympic Gold will stay with our family forever’

Darragh’s mam, Caroline ( Redmond) is a clerical officer in Gorey Garda Station.

AGSI congratulates Darragh and wishes him well as he gets stuck into his leaving certificate year in Gorey.
