2014 Annual Delegate Conference of AGSI to Focus on the Review of An Garda Síochána

The Malton Hotel Killarney, 14,15,16 April

The 2014 Annual Delegate Conference of the Association of Garda Sergeants & Inspectors will be hosted in Killarney, Co. Kerry with a focus on the Review of An Garda Síochána.

The Conference, themed ‘Haddington Road: Your Association. Your Review’ will see the Associations’ 31 Branches debate the reform they would like to take place in An Garda Síochána.

General Secretary John Redmond says, “We have introduced a new feature to Conference this year in the form of a panel debate and we pose the question – ‘what should a modern police force look like?’ We have external experts joining us so that the views are representative of modern Ireland and not just of our Association.”

Panel members include Tom O’Malley, Senior Lecturer in Law, NUI Galway, Tony Geoghegan, CEO, Merchants Quay Ireland and Marc Coleman, Economist, Broadcaster and Author. John Redmond of AGSI will also sit on the panel. Jonathan Healy of Newstalk will chair the debate.

Minister for Justice Alan Shatter will not address the AGSI Annual Delegate Conference this year having declined the Association’s invitation to attend.

However, Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan will address delegates on Tuesday afternoon and take questions from the delegates.

There are a total of 23 Motions up for debate including the provision of a Police Authority, the issuing of Tazer to an expanded number of Gardaí, a call to have the confidential reporting charter reviewed and revised to make it more robust in the protection of genuine whistle blowers in An Garda Síochána, training for newly promoted Sergeants, a call for a new and updated job specification for Sergeants, and a call for a medical review concerning the prevalence of adverse health conditions on members of An Garda Síochána since the introduction of the Westmanstown Roster.

The AGSI Annual Delegate Conference starts on Monday 14th April and runs until Wednesday 16th April in the Malton Hotel Killarney.
