The incoming Commissioner Justin Kelly has challenges to tackle amid staffing crisis, rising resignations, and capacity concerns

The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI) has today welcomed the appointment of the new Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly, at a pivotal moment for policing in Ireland.

Speaking following the announcement, AGSI General Secretary Ronan Clogher said the organisation looks forward to working constructively with the new Garda Commissioner at a time when policing is facing significant internal and external challenges.

“This appointment comes at a critical juncture. The dual role of An Garda Síochána in both policing and state security requires a clear vision and increased capacity, which is currently under strain.”

AGSI highlighted the ongoing crisis in recruitment and retention, with resignations continuing to rise. “Morale is low across the ranks,” says Ronan Clogher.

“There is a need for urgent action to stabilise the workforce and restore confidence in the future of the organisation.”

The Association emphasised the importance of closer collaboration between management and representative bodies.

“Rebuilding capacity and trust will require respectful and genuine engagement with those of us on the ground. We want to be part of the solution.

“As the voice for 2,500 Sergeants and Inspectors nationwide, AGSI stands ready to advocate on behalf of our members and contribute constructively to the future of policing in Ireland.

“We look forward to working with incoming Commissioner Kelly and wish him well.”
